Litter bins, chewing gum clean up, fly tipping
Idea | Public bins in every street so when people see rubbish it gets put in. Stop paying people to clean up chewing gum, use the unemployed that are doing nothing. Local councils should be checking on their area for fly tipping on a regular basis, with fines in place if guilty. Encourage people to look after their own streets. Ban people from hanging washing in balconies (eyesores). |

Response | The council has more than 4,000 public litter bins across South Lanarkshire, supported by a Litter Strategy to encourage use of the bin infrastructure and reduce the volume of litter discarded by careless individuals. In recent years, the council has been successful in bidding for and winning grants for chewing gum removal machinery and staffing. This work is already underway at no cost to the council. The Grounds Service operate in local teams and will also report and remove fly tipping. Environmental Health colleagues will also investigate to determine if the perpetrators can be identified and enforcement action undertaken. In terms of our town centres, the council is progressing masterplans for Hamilton and East Kilbride that will see significant investment over time and repurpose each of the centres with improved streetscapes. People are entitled to hang their washing on the balconies to dry clothing. |
