About usThe Highbacks is a community-led hub in the heart of Burnhill, supporting families, young people, and older adults in an area facing high deprivation. We provide a safe, welcoming space where people can connect, access practical support, and take part in inclusive programmes that build confidence, wellbeing, and community pride. Our work blends creative activities, advocacy, and essential services, ensuring local people have what they need to feel supported, heard, and hopeful about their future.
Our WishPurpose of the project We are creating a dedicated outdoor seating and gathering area at The Highbacks, a community-led hub supporting families, young people, and older adults in Burnhill, South Lanarkshire. This space will offer a safe, welcoming place for people to sit together, connect, take part in activities, and enjoy our outdoor environment. It will strengthen community wellbeing, reduce isolation, and help us host more inclusive programmes throughout the year. Why this matters Burnhill is an area of high deprivation, and many local residents have limited access to safe, attractive outdoor spaces. By developing this seating area, we are: - Providing a calm, social space where people can gather and build relationships. - Expanding our outdoor activity offer, including family sessions, youth groups, and wellbeing programmes. - Creating a sense of pride and ownership in the community. - Improving the look and feel of our environment, making it more welcoming for all ages. Materials we are seeking To bring this project to life, we are seeking donations of materials from companies who want to support community wellbeing and regeneration. Items we are looking for include: - Slabs or paving for a safe, level seating base. - Timber to construct a pagoda/pergola structure and seating. - Outdoor seating materials (timber, fixings, or pre-made benches). - Lighting suitable for outdoor community spaces. - Plants, planters, and soil to soften the space and improve biodiversity. - Materials for an outdoor fire pit area such as stones, bricks, or heat resistant surrounds. - Any surplus, reclaimed, or end of line stock that can be repurposed sustainably. We welcome support from builders’ merchants, timber suppliers, landscapers, garden centres, electrical suppliers, and any company interested in contributing to a meaningful community project. Impact for donors Supporting this project helps create a lasting, visible improvement in a community that needs it most. Donors will be acknowledged publicly through our social media, community events, and on-site signage, and will be contributing directly to a safer, more connected Burnhill.
