How to use the Area Profiles tool
Our Area Profiles tool lets you explore key facts and statistics about South Lanarkshire. You can create a ready‑made profile or build your own by choosing the geography and topics you want. Profiles include information on population, health, education, employment, housing and the local environment.
This guide shows you how to use the online tool and where to click.
Open the Area Profiles tool
- Go to the Facts and figures in South Lanarkshire page on the website.
- Select Area Profiles in the menu.
- Choose the Area Profiling Tool button.

Step 1: Choose your map type
When the map opens, select Change map type.
You will see a dropdown list of available geographies.
Choose the one you want — the smallest area available is a data zone.

Step 2: Select your area
You can select an area in three ways:
(a) Click directly on the map
Zoom in using the +/– tools, then tap the areas you want.
Selected areas turn blue.
(b) Choose from a list
Select Choose area from a list, then tick the areas you need.
(c) Use the search box
Type a place name into Area search, then select Run Search.
Pick your area from the filtered list.

You can use one method or mix them together.
Step 3: Choose a report theme
Once your areas are selected, choose Select Report Theme.
Use the dropdown menu to choose a topic such as:
- communities and environment
- education and learning
- children and young people
- health and wellbeing
- housing and land
- economy
Then select Run report.

Reports may take up to a minute depending on your internet connection.
Step 4: View or download your report
Your report opens as a PDF.
You can save it or print it.

To create another report, select your browser’s Back button to return to the tool.
Your chosen areas will remain selected.
