Classroom organisation in primary schools

Classroom organisation in primary schools

We organise classes in primary schools each year to make sure children receive the best possible learning experience. Class structures may change from year to year depending on pupil numbers, staffing and available space.

Head teachers plan class organisation carefully, following national guidance and council policy. They aim to support every child’s learning, progress and wellbeing.

How classes are organised

Each year, we review school rolls and staffing levels. Head teachers then decide how to organise classes based on:

  • the number of pupils in the school
  • available teachers and staff
  • class size limits set by law
  • school accommodation and space

Types of classes

Primary schools may use different types of class organisation:

  • single-stage classes (one year group)
  • composite (multi-stage) classes (more than one year group)
  • group teaching within classes based on learning needs

Composite classes

Composite classes group children from more than one year stage. These are common in many schools across Scotland. They help schools make the best use of staff and resources while maintaining high-quality learning.

Children are usually grouped by their level of learning, particularly in literacy and numeracy. This helps make sure teaching matches each child’s needs.

Your child’s learning

All children follow programmes suited to their individual level, whether they are in a single-stage or composite class. Teachers adapt lessons so every child can progress at the right pace.

There is no evidence that being in a composite class affects a child’s attainment. Many children also benefit socially from working with different age groups.

Common questions

Is my child being held back in a composite class?

No. Children are placed in classes to make best use of resources and support their learning. They continue to progress at their own level.

What if my child’s friends are in another class?

Children usually make new friendships quickly and still mix with others during breaks and school activities.

Can I request a different class?

Class organisation is the responsibility of the head teacher. If you have concerns about your child’s learning, you should contact the school to discuss them.

When you will be told

Schools normally confirm class arrangements in June. In some cases, changes may happen later due to staffing or pupil numbers.

Need more information?

If you would like to discuss your child’s class or progress, contact your school. The head teacher will be happy to help.
