Meeting the needs of children who require additional support

Some children may receive additional support at school. The additional support provided will vary depending on their needs.

The additional support provided at school may include:

  • adapting the curriculum
  • equipment or resources to help learning
  • some extra time with a teacher or support assistant

If you think your child requires support over and above that which is available in their local school you should first contact the Head Teacher, who will arrange to review your child's progress at school and will discuss the next steps with you.

For most children it will be possible to meet their needs in their local school.

Following a multi-agency discussion, a referral may be made to the Additional Support Needs Forum.

The Additional Support Needs Forum will consider your child's needs and will make a recommendation for the most appropriate provision for him or her.
