Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA)
Checking the environmental impact of our plans
We carry out Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) for our plans and policies when the law requires it. An SEA looks at how a plan could affect the environment before it is finalised.
This helps us make better decisions, reduce harm and improve positive outcomes. We assess plans as they are prepared so we can make changes early. We also consult national bodies and, where needed, ask for public views.
How SEA works
SEA is a step‑by‑step process set out in law. We assess environmental impacts alongside plan preparation.
We:
- review whether a plan needs an SEA
- assess likely environmental effects
- make changes to reduce risks or improve outcomes
- publish findings in an Environmental Report when required
Who we consult
We must consult national environmental bodies as part of the process. These are:
We do this through the Scottish Government SEA Gateway.
Current work and progress
We regularly review plans to decide if an SEA is needed. Some plans may not need a full assessment if they have little or no environmental impact.
Recent work includes:
- early screening of several plans where SEA was not required
- formal screening decisions agreed with consultation bodies
- ongoing SEA work for key plans, including the Local Development Plan and Local Transport Strategy
Environmental Reports will be published where required, and some plans will go out for public consultation.
Supporting information
We use the South Lanarkshire State of the Environment Report to provide baseline data for assessments. This helps us understand local environmental conditions and track change over time.
