Air Source Heat Pumps

Using your air source heat pump

This page explains how to use your air source heat pump safely, efficiently, and at the lowest possible cost. It tells you what we do, what you need to do, how to control your heating and hot water, and where to get help if you have questions or money worries.

Servicing and safety checks

We write to all tenants in advance to arrange servicing appointments for air source heat pumps. These regular checks are important to keep your system safe, efficient, and working properly.

If the appointment date or time does not suit you, you must contact us as soon as possible to rearrange. Missing appointments can affect the safety of your home and nearby homes.

How your heating system works

Your air source heat pump works best when it stays switched on all the time. It is designed to run 24 hours a day and only produces heat when your home needs it.

The system reacts to the outside temperature. Even though it stays on, it only works harder when the temperature drops below your setting.

Turning the system on and off regularly costs more than leaving it running all the time. For the best results and lowest bills, always keep it switched on.

Using hot water

The manufacturer sets the hot water temperature, but you can adjust it to suit your needs.

If you need extra hot water, you can boost it for one hour:

  • Press and hold the tap symbol on the top left of the controller for three seconds
  • The boost cannot be cancelled once it starts

Use boost only when needed, as it can increase your energy use.

Changing the temperature

You control the temperature using the controller:

  • Press the up button to increase the temperature
  • Press the down button to lower the temperature

When you see the temperature symbol, the controller is measuring the room temperature and adjusting the heating automatically.

Using holiday mode

Holiday mode lowers your heating while you are away, helping reduce energy costs.

To set holiday mode:

  • Press and hold the suitcase button for three seconds until it flashes
  • Use the up and down buttons to choose how long you will be away
  • Press the suitcase button again to save

To cancel holiday mode, press and hold the suitcase button for three seconds.

If a warning symbol appears, the setting did not save and you will need to try again.

Air source heat pump do’s and don’ts

Using your system correctly will help keep your bills down.

Do

  • Leave your heat pump on all the time
  • Keep the settings as set by the engineer
  • Use holiday mode if you are away for a long period
  • Turn heating down slightly in bedrooms if needed

Do not

  • Switch the system on and off
  • Change settings unless you know what they do
  • Dry clothes on radiators, as this reduces efficiency and raises costs

If you want to change settings and are not sure how, contact your housing officer first.
