Electric Vehicle Charging point installations at council properties
Installing an electric vehicle charging point at your home
If you drive an electric vehicle, charging at home can be convenient and cost‑effective. If you rent your home from us and want to install an electric vehicle charging point, you must get our written permission first. This page explains what you need to do and how to apply.
Do you need permission?
Yes. As a council tenant, your tenancy agreement says you must ask for permission before making any changes to your home. This includes installing an electric vehicle charging point, as it involves electrical work and changes to the property.
Do not arrange any work until you have received our approval in writing.
How to apply
You can apply for permission using our online application form. The form lets us check that the work will be safe, suitable for the property and carried out by a qualified installer.
Before you start your application, make sure you have copies of the following documents ready.
What documents you need
You must provide:
- a copy of the installer’s electrotechnical certification scheme grade card, showing up‑to‑date qualifications that meet current wiring regulations
- proof that the installer is registered with SELECT or NICEIC as an approved contractor
- evidence that the installer has specific training in electric vehicle charging installations
- proof that the distribution network operator, such as Scottish Power, has been notified
- a completed electric vehicle charge point application
Your application may be delayed if any documents are missing.
What happens next
We will review your application once you submit it. If everything is in order, we will confirm whether you can go ahead. Any work must meet safety standards and must not affect other residents or shared areas.
