HomeImprove service and scheme of assistance

If you own your home or rent privately and need help to repair, maintain, improve or adapt it, our HomeImprove service may be able to support you. We offer advice, practical help and, in some cases, financial assistance. You can apply online at any time.

The Scheme of Assistance, delivered through HomeImprove, helps homeowners and private tenants keep their homes safe, accessible and in good condition. You can read more about the scheme on the Scottish Government website.

If you are eligible and want to apply for any of the assistance available, complete the HomeImprove assistance enquiry form:

Or apply for adaptations for disabled people using the Equipment and adaptations referral form:

Who can get help

You may qualify if you are:

  • a property owner
  • a private tenant responsible for the work
  • a life renter
  • a disabled person living in the home (following an assessment for adaptations)

What you can expect

If you are eligible, HomeImprove can offer tailored advice and practical help. The scheme aims to:

  • give clear information and support to help owners look after their homes
  • help disabled and older people live independently
  • offer basic financial support for major issues, including homes that fall below the tolerable standard
  • encourage owners to take part in common repairs
  • prevent homes from falling into serious disrepair by promoting early action

Can you get a grant?

Grants are available for some types of work.

Adaptations for disabled people

A mandatory 80% grant is given for eligible adaptations after an occupational therapy assessment. In some cases, we can offer a 100% grant.

This covers work such as low‑level showers, wet‑floor showers or essential internal alterations.

Other priority work

You may get:

  • 25% for work costing up to £5,000
  • 35% for work costing £5,000 or more

Support may be available for issues such as:

  • structural instability (confirmed in a structural report)
  • no internal toilet for your household
  • inadequate drinking water supply
  • upgrading a cesspool to a septic tank
  • significant rising damp that means the home fails the tolerable standard
  • common repairs linked to council housing investment programmes

Criteria and conditions apply to all financial support.
