Septic tanks and cesspit emptying
When to empty your private sewage treatment system
Septic tanks
- should be pumped out once a year
- alternatively, the sludge and scum layers should be measured annually
- regular maintenance prevents solids from entering and clogging the soil treatment system
Cesspits
- usually have no outfall, so they need to be emptied more frequently
Who carries out emptying
Scottish Water empties both septic tanks and cesspits. Costs vary depending on the size and type of system.
Regulatory requirements
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) regulates what can be discharged from septic tanks and cesspits into watercourses.
Your septic tank must be registered with SEPA. For more details, visit the SEPA website.
