Primary school road safety

Helping children stay safe on the roads

We support road safety education in primary schools to help children learn how to stay safe when walking, cycling and travelling.

Schools can take part in a range of programmes that build confidence and skills through practical activities and real-life learning.

Road safety lessons and activities

Primary schools use a range of campaigns and classroom activities to teach children how to:

  • recognise road risks
  • make safe choices
  • travel safely with others

You can ask your child’s school what road safety learning they offer.

Become a Junior Road Safety Officer

Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) help promote road safety in their school.

What you will do

  • share safety messages in classes and assemblies
  • create posters or displays
  • organise games or competitions

How to apply

You can apply through your school. This may include a short form and an interview with your teacher.

What you get

Selected pupils receive a badge, pen and activity book.

Bikeability helps children learn to cycle safely and confidently.

Level 1 (Primary 5)

Children learn basic skills such as:

  • balance and control
  • starting and stopping
  • simple turns

Training takes place in a safe off-road area.

Level 2 (Primary 6)

Children learn how to ride safely on roads, including:

  • road positioning
  • turning and signalling
  • overtaking safely

They also learn about the Highway Code and planning safe journeys.

Get involved

  • ask your school if they offer Bikeability
  • contact us about instructor training

Child Pedestrian Training Scheme

Children learn how to cross roads safely through supervised sessions near their school.

What children learn

  • choosing safe places to cross
  • crossing near parked cars safely
  • understanding junctions
  • using safe habits every day

Sessions are supported by teachers, staff and parent helpers.

Ask your school if they take part.

Children learn to:

  • understand risks
  • build confidence
  • deal with peer pressure
  • make safer decisions

These resources are used as part of classroom learning.

Visit the Road Safety Scotland website to explore activities.
