Roads permits and permissions

When you need permission to work on a road

You must get permission from us before carrying out any work on a public road. This is required by law under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 and the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991. (Transport Scotland Act 2019)

This includes activities such as placing equipment, digging the road or managing traffic. You must apply for the correct permit and pay the fee before any work starts.

Before applying, check if the location is part of the public road network using our road status map.

When you need a permit

You must apply if you plan to:

  • place street furniture or materials on the road
  • put a builders skip on the road
  • excavate the road
  • carry out work involving underground services
  • lower a kerb
  • erect scaffolding
  • site cranes or lifting platforms

If you are unsure, contact us before starting work.

Traffic management requirements

All work on public roads must follow the Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice.

You are responsible for making sure safe traffic management is in place to protect road users, pedestrians and workers.

Applying for permission

You must complete the correct application form and pay the required fee at the time of submission.

Make sure:

  • you choose the correct permit type
  • you calculate the correct fee
  • your payment details are ready

We will review your application and let you know if permission can be granted.

Applications will not be processed without payment.
