Premises licence to sell alcohol
Layout plan checklist
You must provide a clear layout plan when you apply for a premises licence. The plan helps us understand how your premises are set up, how people enter and leave, and how you will manage safety and alcohol sales. You can submit your plan with your application. Make sure it is accurate, easy to read and drawn to scale.
Use the correct scale
Draw your plan to one of the following:
- 1mm to 100mm, or
- 1mm to 50mm (or another scale agreed with the licensing board)
Show the building and access
Include:
- the full boundary and dimensions of the building and any outside areas
- external and internal walls
- surrounding streets and their names
- all public entrances and exits, with widths
- any other escape routes, with widths
Show safety features
Mark clearly:
- fire and smoke detection systems
- firefighting equipment
- stairs, steps, lifts and elevators
Show facilities
Your plan should also include:
- toilets (labelled male, female or accessible)
- areas for children and young people
- areas they can access
Show how each area is used
Describe what happens in each part of the premises in line with your operating plan.
If you sell alcohol
Add:
- where alcohol will be displayed
- the maximum width and height (in metres) of display areas
- the total length (in meters) of any additional alcohol displays
Tips for your plan
- keep labels simple and clear
- use symbols with a key or legend
- make sure all measurements are in metres
- double-check that everything is easy to understand
