Personal licence for managing licensed premises

Who needs a personal licence

If you manage or supervise a place that sells alcohol, you must have a personal licence. This licence lets you authorise alcohol sales and ensure your premises follow the law. You can apply online, renew an existing licence, or contact us for help.

A personal licence costs £50 and lasts 10 years. To get one, you must pass an approved training course.

You need a personal licence if you:

  • manage or supervise alcohol sales
  • authorise other staff to sell alcohol

The personal licence holder and premises licence holder can be different people, but the premises manager must be told.

How to apply

To apply, you must:

  • complete an approved training course
  • apply online or contact us for help

If you already have a licence and want to update or renew it, contact us to get login details for the online system.

Renew your licence

You must renew your personal licence before it expires. If you miss the deadline, you may lose the right to sell alcohol.

When you renew, you must send:

  • your original training or refresher certificate
  • 2 passport photos
  • your current personal licence
  • the £50 fee

We cannot process your application without these.

Collecting your licence

When your licence is ready, you must bring proof of identification to collect your documents.

If someone else is collecting them for you, they must bring:
  • something in writing from you giving permission
  • their own identification
The signature must match the signature on your application form. We do not accept permission by email.
