Sunbed regulations
Your legal responsibilities as a sunbed business
If you run a sunbed business, or sell or hire sunbeds, you must follow the law. The rules are there to protect people’s health, especially children and young people.
If you do not follow these rules, you could face fixed penalties or fines.
Who the rules apply to
These rules apply if you:
- operate a tanning salon
- hire out sunbeds
- sell sunbeds for use by the public
You are responsible for how sunbeds are used on your premises and for making sure customers receive the correct information.
Age restrictions
You must not:
- allow anyone under 18 to use a sunbed
- sell or hire a sunbed to anyone under 18
Breaking these rules can result in a £100 fixed penalty or a fine of up to £2,500 if you are convicted.
Supervision and information
You must:
- make sure sunbeds are supervised at all times
- give customers the required health and safety information
- clearly display the required warning notices
Failing to do this can result in a £50 fixed penalty or a fine of up to £2,500 if you are convicted.
Inspections and records
Authorised officers may visit your premises to check you are following the rules. You must:
- allow officers to enter and inspect your premises
- provide records and information when asked
- provide the name and address of the business operator
If you do not cooperate, you could be fined up to £2,500 on conviction.
