How Trading Standards can help you

We help protect you, your family and your community by making sure goods and services in South Lanarkshire are safe, fair and described honestly. You can contact us if you are worried about a scam, a rogue trader, an unsafe product or something you have been sold. We also support local businesses with clear advice so they can trade legally and confidently.

What we do

We investigate scams, doorstep crime and unfair trading. We check new and second‑hand goods to make sure they are safe, and we take action when products are dangerous or misleading. Our officers also carry out inspections and enforcement exercises, including detecting illegal tobacco.

We visit shops that sell age‑restricted products such as tobacco, vapes and fireworks. We give advice and carry out test purchases to make sure the law is followed.

Support for businesses

If your business is based in South Lanarkshire, you can contact us for free advice on consumer protection law. We can help you understand product safety, fair trading, pricing, contracts and selling goods in person or online.

You can also apply to join Buy with Confidence, our approved trader scheme for businesses that can show they trade honestly and fairly.

We provide an online business advice pack, and if it does not answer your question, you can get in touch with us for more help.

We test and verify weighing and measuring equipment used for trade. From 1 April 2025, our fees are:

  • £85.64 per hour for an inspector
  • £51.30 per hour for support staff
