Local Nature Reserves in South Lanarkshire

Westburn

Westburn is a local nature reserve near Cambuslang where you can enjoy a range of wildlife and natural habitats. Located about one mile east of the town, it offers a peaceful green space for walking, exploring and connecting with nature.

What you can see at Westburn

Westburn includes a mix of wetland habitats such as marsh, swamp, marshy grassland and open water. The West Burn runs along the western edge of the site, adding to its variety of wildlife habitats.

Mature broadleaved trees are found across the reserve, with woodland planted around the boundaries. You can also find areas of gorse scrub, which provide shelter for birds and other wildlife.

These different habitats support a wide variety of plants and animals, making Westburn an important place for nature in South Lanarkshire.

About the reserve

Westburn was once farmland in an area that later became heavily industrialised. Today, it is being managed as a local nature reserve to protect and improve its natural features.

It is one of 16 new local nature reserves designated by us in 2022, alongside the extended Langlands Moss reserve.
