Foundation Apprenticeships

Where can a Foundation Apprenticeship take you

Colorful banner with the logo and text ‘South Lanarkshire Foundation Apprenticeship Consortium’ on the left, and vibrant curved rainbow lines on the right.

A Foundation Apprenticeship lets you work towards a qualification at the same level as a Higher while still at school. You learn practical skills, spend time with an employer and build real experience in the industry you’re interested in. You can use it to move into work, college, university or another apprenticeship.

Why choose a Foundation Apprenticeship

A Foundation Apprenticeship gives you:

  • a qualification at SCQF Level 6, assessed throughout the course with no final exam
  • experience in a real workplace, helping you understand the job and build confidence
  • a strong addition to your CV or personal statement
  • a recognised entry qualification for every college and university in Scotland
  • the chance to fast‑track part of a Modern Apprenticeship in the same subject

By the time you finish, you’ll have practical skills, industry knowledge and a qualification that helps you stand out.

What you can do next

Start work

Your work placement gives you experience that employers value. It can help you get your first job or show an employer that you’re ready for a Modern or Graduate Apprenticeship.

Modern Apprenticeship

If you continue in the same subject, you may complete your Modern Apprenticeship more quickly. Students who complete their Foundation Apprenticeship through the South Lanarkshire Consortium are guaranteed an interview for Modern Apprenticeships in Early Learning and Childcare, Health and Social Care and Business Administration.

College

You can move on to National Certificates, Higher National Certificates or Higher National Diplomas in related subjects.

University

All Scottish universities accept Foundation Apprenticeships. You’ll still need to meet the entry requirements for your chosen course, and your apprenticeship may help you do that.

Graduate Apprenticeship

A Graduate Apprenticeship lets you work towards a degree while employed. Most learning takes place in the workplace, supported by time at college or university.
