Children and young people with additional support needs

The Council has a legal responsibility to make specific provision for young children/young people with additional support needs. Legislation recognises that the disability of one child in a family can impact on the lives of all family members.

The services we provide allows each child to be treated as an individual and be encouraged to express his/her views and have these taken into account. We have a duty to:

• assess and arrange services according to need - through personal support, group activities or residential/respite care
• work in partnership with other agencies to provide appropriate and safe care for children and their families
• develop and purchase a variety of services according to need
• protect children who may be at risk through their own actions or those of other people
