Children and young people with additional support needs
Our responsibilities
The Council has a legal responsibility to make specific provision for young children/young people with additional support needs. Legislation recognises that the disability of one child in a family can impact on the lives of all family members.
The services we provide allows each child to be treated as an individual and be encouraged to express his/her views and have these taken into account. We have a duty to:
- assess and arrange services according to need - through personal support, group activities or residential/respite care
- work in partnership with other agencies to provide appropriate and safe care for children and their families
- develop and purchase a variety of services according to need
- protect children who may be at risk through their own actions or those of other people
For more information and help for children in our schools who need extra support please go to our Education and Learning page.
