Local Transport Strategy 2024-2034

Our current Local Transport Strategy (LTS) was published in 2013 and presented a 10-year vision for transport in the local authority area.

With the 10-year timeframe of the current strategy coming to an end this year, we are now in the process of developing a new strategy that will cover the period 2024-2034.

The new strategy for South Lanarkshire will set the future direction for our approach to the development and upkeep of the transport infrastructure and policy within our area. The strategy will also set out how we will contribute to the delivery of the obligations set out in the National and Regional Transport Strategies and other key policy drivers.

Transport policies and actions will be developed, and indicators identified to monitor the progress made by us on these actions.

What are we doing to develop the new LTS?

Commencing in Summer 2023, a number of key tasks will be undertaken:

  • Consultation and engagement to identify the key problems, issues, and opportunities for transport in South Lanarkshire.
  • Review of the existing strategy and a review of the policy and strategy context.
  • Development of a vision statement with associated objectives, actions, and indicators required to deliver the vision and monitor progress, ultimately setting the strategic direction for transport investment and policy in South Lanarkshire for the next 10 years.
  • Preparation of supporting assessments, including Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), Statutory Impact Assessments (SIAs), and Habitat Regulations Appraisal (HRA).
  • Further consultation on the draft strategy.

The final strategy is programmed to be completed and launched in Spring 2024.

How can I get involved in the development of the Local Transport Strategy?

To support the development of the new strategy, a programme of public and stakeholder engagement will commence in July 2023.

We are inviting members of the public and other key stakeholders to respond to our online consultation, which will support the development of the strategy in the coming months.

The online survey will be available to complete between Tuesday 18 July and Friday 1 September 2023.

Paper copies of the survey can be requested by emailing Roadsandtransportation@southlanarkshire.gov.uk with LTS as the email subject.
