Non-dependant deductions from Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction
What is a non-dependant?
A non-dependant is someone over the age of 18 years who lives in your home but is not your partner, joint tenant, or lodger.
This could be:
- an adult son or daughter
- a relative or friend
How does this affect my Housing Benefit/Council Tax Reduction?
If you have a non-dependant living with you, your Housing Benefit/Council Tax Reduction may be reduced by a certain amount each week:
- the amount your Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction is reduced by depends on the circumstances of the person living with you and how much income they have.
- if the non-dependant is working, the amount that is deducted depends on the level of their gross earnings.
Circumstances in which there is no deduction
1. Where the non-dependant is:
- under 18 years of age.
- in full-time education or on youth training schemes
- in receipt of Pension Credit
- in prison
- in hospital for more than 52 weeks
2. There is no deduction if the person claiming benefit/reduction, or their partner is:
- registered blind
- receiving Attendance Allowance or Pension Age Disability Payment
- receiving the care component of Disability Living Allowance or Child Disability Payment
- receiving the daily living component of Personal Independence Payment or Adult Disability Payment
- receiving
- receiving Armed Forces Independence Payments
3. There is no deduction for Council Tax Reduction for any non-dependant who is disregarded for Council Tax.
