Trees - arboriculture and preservation orders

We look after trees in our streets, parks, open spaces and woodlands, and some in council house gardens. We make sure trees are safe, healthy and well maintained.

Before reporting an issue, please check what we will and will not deal with below. If you are a council tenant, contact your local area housing office about tree issues in your garden.

When to contact us

You should contact us if a tree on council land is unsafe, damaged or could cause harm. We will:

• prune or remove trees that are unsafe, dying or dangerous

If a tree is an immediate risk to people or property, or is blocking a road, call us on 0303 123 1020 (out of hours: 0800 242024).

When we will not take action

We do not prune or remove trees for everyday or minor issues, including:

• falling leaves, pollen or sap
• birds, insects or wildlife
• blocking light, views or TV signals
• branches overhanging into neighbouring properties
• tree size or movement in the wind
• minor damage to paths, walls or drains
• concerns about possible future damage

Your responsibilities

You may be able to trim branches or roots that cross into your property, but you must take care and avoid damaging the tree. We recommend getting advice from a qualified tree specialist and checking with us first, as some trees are protected.

Reporting a tree issue

For non-urgent problems, use our online form to report issues in public areas. During storms, we focus on emergencies first, so routine requests may take longer.

If a fallen tree is affecting roads, signs or traffic lights, please report a road fault.
