Noise complaints

Noise from neighbours

No home is completely soundproof, and some level of noise is expected. However, if you are disturbed by unreasonable noise, for example loud music late at night, Environmental Services can investigate.

We may:

  • take noise measurements
  • issue a Warning Notice requiring the noise to stop
  • use enforcement options such as informal discussions, letters, equipment seizure, warrants, Fixed Penalty Fines, or reporting to the Procurator Fiscal

We may also refer you to mediation services, or work with Housing and Technical Resources, housing associations, or the Anti‑Social Behaviour Unit where appropriate.

Reporting neighbour noise

  • Office hours: Call 0303 123 1015
    • Monday to Thursday: 8.45am to 4.45pm
    • Friday: 8.45am to 4.15pm
  • Out of hours (4.30pm to 3am, 7 days a week): Call the council’s Emergency Out of Hours Service on 0800 24 20 24.

If the noise relates to wider anti‑social behaviour (shouting, swearing, door slamming), contact Housing Services for their Antisocial Investigation Team. If you believe residents are unsafe or illegal activity is taking place, contact the Police on 999 in an emergency or 101 in a non-emergency.

Further information on fireworks noise is available on the Fireworks legislation page.

What you can do now

Keep a note of when the noise happens and report it to the appropriate service so we can look into it.
