Moving from nursery to school
Starting primary school
If your child attends a nursery attached to one of our primary schools, please note that they do not automatically get a place at that school.
Catchment schools
All primary schools have designated catchment areas.
To find the catchment school for your address, you can:
- use the South Lanarkshire school catchment area checker, or
- contact: Edsuppserv.helpline@southlanarkshire.gov.uk
Attending a school outwith your catchment area
If you want your child to attend a school that is not your catchment school, you must submit a placing request. Approval of placing requests is not guaranteed.

When children move from nursery to primary school
In general, children whose 5th birthday falls between 1 March of the current year and the end of February of the following year will leave nursery education and start primary school.
You must still enrol your child at the catchment school for your address.
Deferred entry
If you would like your child to remain at nursery for an additional year, please read the information on deferred entry:
Deferred entry to primary school
Early entry
Parents can apply to request early entry to school. An independent assessment will be carried out to consider the child’s readiness to start school.
