Blocked drains
Fixing blocked sinks and toilets
If your sink or toilet is blocked, the right action depends on whether you are a council tenant, a private tenant or a homeowner. Acting quickly can stop the problem getting worse. Use the guide below to find out who to contact.
Council tenants
If you rent your home from us, contact our repairs centre. We will arrange for someone to assess the problem and carry out the repair.
Private tenants
If you rent from a private landlord or letting agent, you need to contact them and report the blockage. They are responsible for arranging repairs.
If your landlord is not responding or refuses to fix the problem, you can contact our Environmental Services team for advice and support.
Homeowners
If you own your home, you may be able to clear the blockage yourself using drain‑cleaning products from a supermarket or DIY store.
If this does not work, you will need to arrange a repair with a qualified plumber or drainage specialist.
If the problem is coming from another property
If you live in a flat or terraced home and water is overflowing into your home from a neighbour’s sink or toilet, try to speak to the people there first.
If you cannot reach them or there is an urgent problem, contact our Environmental Services team. We can investigate and take appropriate action, especially if the issue is causing damage or affecting hygiene.
