Scottish Swimming brought its nationwide #SupportSchoolSwimming campaign to the Dollan Aqua Centre in East Kilbride, highlighting the importance of fair and equal access to swimming and water safety for all children.

Children from Canberra Primary School joined Triple Olympian Hannah Miley MBE for the event, which focused on how school swimming lessons could help break down financial barriers and ensure no child is left behind when it comes to learning vital life-saving skills.

The event was attended on the day by STV News and received further coverage afterwards from the Daily Record and Yahoo News.

Hannah Miley shared her thoughts on the day: “Swimming has been such a big part of my life, and I know how important it is for all children to have the chance to learn. This isn’t about future Olympians—it’s about water safety. Lessons in school could help save lives.”

Scottish Swimming launched the National Primary School Swimming Framework last year, with 10 local authorities piloting the programme. It offers a flexible approach to delivering swimming lessons in schools, helping children build confidence in and around water.

John Lunn, Chief Executive of Scottish Swimming, explained: “Community swimming lesson costs have gone up by 53% in the past five years. For many families, that makes swimming inaccessible. Bringing it into schools removes that cost and makes sure every child gets the same opportunity to learn.”

Scotland currently sees an average of 96 water-related deaths each year, with around half being accidental. A report published last year by Water Safety Scotland and Scottish Swimming called for greater implementation of school swimming to help address this issue.

The event at Dollan Aqua Centre helped shine a spotlight on the importance of giving all children access to swimming lessons—and the role schools and local authorities can play in making that happen.
