Taxi/private hire car operator's licence

Apply for taxi/private hire car operator's licence

If you want to run a taxi or private hire service, you must have an operator’s licence. Every vehicle you use must also meet our safety and licensing standards.

Apply for a licence

You can apply online for a taxi or private hire car operator’s licence. Make sure you complete all parts of the application and provide the correct details.

What happens next

After you apply, we allow 28 days for any objections. We send your application to Police Scotland so they can give comments or objections if needed.

If you have not heard from us within 28 days, contact Licensing and Registration Services and we will update you on your application.

Collecting your documents

When your licence is ready, you must bring proof of identity when collecting it.

If someone collects your documents for you, they must bring:

  • their own photo identification
  • a signed letter from you giving permission

The letter must include details of who is collecting the documents for you.

We will check the signature on your letter against your application. We cannot accept permission by email.

Fees

The cost of your licence depends on the service:

  • taxi: £559.44
  • taxi transfer: £559.44
  • private hire car: £549.26
  • private hire car transfer: £549.26
  • substitute vehicle: £66.11
  • replacement door stickers: £19.06
  • replacement plates: £35.59

You must display your vehicle plates and identification stickers correctly at all times. If you do not, we may suspend your licence.

Wheelchair access in taxis and private hire cars

Drivers of accessible vehicles must help passengers travel safely and comfortably, at no extra cost, under the Equality Act 2010.

Drivers who are not able to give physical assistance due to a medical condition or disability, can apply for an exemption.

If a driver does not have an exemption and does not meet their duties, they are committing an offence.
