Noise complaints
Report a noise problem
If noise from a home, business or outdoor activity is causing a problem, you can report it to us. We look into noise that regularly disturbs people and help resolve issues where noise levels are unreasonable.
Types of noise we investigate
We investigate noise problems including:
- loud music or TV
- barking dogs
- noise from pubs or clubs
- industrial or commercial noise
- burglar alarms
- fireworks
- ice cream van chimes
- ongoing noise from neighbouring homes
What happens when you report noise
We start by investigating the situation. In many cases, we will contact the person causing the noise to give advice and ask them to keep noise to reasonable levels, especially at night.
If the problem continues and we confirm a noise nuisance, we can take formal action. This includes serving an Abatement Notice, which legally requires the noise to stop or be reduced.
If an Abatement Notice is ignored, we may report the matter to the Procurator Fiscal.
Fixed penalty notices
In some situations, we can issue a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice for noise offences. This depends on the type of noise and how often it happens.
Noise and planning decisions
We also look at noise issues when new buildings are planned. This includes homes built near busy roads, factories or other noisy areas, or new businesses proposed near housing. In some cases, we may require steps to reduce noise as part of the planning process.
