Scrap metal
All household waste and recycling centres in South Lanarkshire will accept scrap metal.
Scrap metal is sorted into its various types and reprocessed into new metal of the same type. The largest user of recycled metal is the UK steel industry who use around seven million tonnes a year in the manufacture of about 18 million tonnes of new steel. The iron foundry industry also uses around one million tonnes of specific grades of metal annually.
Recycling scrap metal is more efficient than producing new metal from ore. It also prevents air pollution and reduces water usage.
