East Kilbride Development Corporation
You can explore a large collection of records from the East Kilbride Development Corporation, the organisation that designed and built the new town of East Kilbride. These records cover housing, industry, planning, publicity and the town’s early growth. You can view them at the Archives and Records Centre.
What the Corporation did
The Corporation was set up in 1947 to build East Kilbride and encourage people and businesses to move to the new town. In its first decade, it oversaw the construction of thousands of homes, factories, shops, schools and community buildings. It continued this work until it closed in 1996.
From 1973 to 1977, it also managed the development of Stonehouse New Town.
