Data protection
The Information Commissioner and your rights
The Information Commissioner is responsible for enforcing the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and offering advice and assistance to both the council and individuals.
What the Commissioner does
If someone raises a concern, the Commissioner looks at whether data protection rules have been followed or if a breach may have happened.
If the Commissioner finds a problem, they tell us what action we should take to fix it and prevent it from happening again.
What the Commissioner cannot do
The Commissioner cannot award compensation. If we do not follow the recommended action, the issue may be passed to the courts to decide what happens next.
