Paying council rent
Paying your rent as a South Lanarkshire Council tenant
It is important to keep your rent payments up to date. Your rent helps us provide housing and other essential services. If you are finding it hard to pay, please contact us as soon as possible so we can support you.
If you are having trouble paying
If you are worried about missing a payment, speak to your housing officer at your local housing office. We can help you look at your options and avoid arrears.
You can also get confidential and independent advice from our Money Matters service. They can help with debt issues and benefits advice. More information can be found on our Problems paying rent page.
The average weekly rent in South Lanarkshire for 2025/26 is £89.93
When your rent is due
As a tenant, you are responsible for paying your rent on time. If you are not sure of your payment dates, you can check our fortnightly rent cycles page.
If you are a new tenant, you must pay two weeks’ rent in advance when you sign your tenancy. If you receive housing benefit or universal credit, we will take this into account.
If you are unsure how much rent you are expected to pay or have difficulty paying your rent on time please contact your local area housing office where our staff will be happy to help you.
Ways to pay rent
- Direct Debit is the simplest and our recommended option.
- fortnightly payments - these are taken directly from your bank the Thursday before the payment is due. For example, the rent for dates 21 March to 3 April, would be taken from your bank on 2 April. This would be every fortnight and is not able to be changed to any other dates.
- monthly payments - you choose which date you would prefer - 1st, 7th, 14th, 21st or 28th
Our online form makes it very easy to arrange your Direct Debit. There’s no paperwork, no posting, no going to the bank. It’s all done very quickly. Try it!
Other ways to pay
Please note: we can't accept payments by American Express or Electron.

- Phone - payments can be made by credit or debit card over the phone. Contact our 24-hour payments call centre. You will need your ten digit cashier number from your notification letter or payment card
