Dropping in or making an appointment with Building Standards

Dropping in

During office hours you can drop in to any of our Planning and Building Standards offices or Q and A offices where you can get basic information and answers to general questions.

During a drop-in visit you will be able to:

  • get advice on whether you need a building warrant for the work you plan to do
  • find out how to complete a building warrant application form
  • find out how much an application will cost
  • collect building warrant and other application forms
  • get other general information that does not involve speaking to a building standards surveyor

Making an appointment

You should make an appointment if you need:

  • to talk to a specific building standards surveyor
  • to discuss your application prior to submission
  • to discuss a building warrant application which has not yet been granted
  • information from archived files such as copies of warrants or completion certificates

If you visit without an appointment you may not be able to see a building standards surveyor. This is because they are often out of the office on site visits.

What if your question can't be answered?

We will always try to answer your questions when you visit us, but sometimes it is not possible. If we can't give you an answer there and then we will give you a date when we will get back to you.

Any information or advice that we give does not bind or prejudice our actions or decisions in any way.

Need it in writing?

If you need proof of any discussion with us, please write to the relevant office. We will reply to your letter within 10 working days. Let us know who you spoke to and what it was about. If it is a complex issue we may tell you that it will take longer than 10 days to give you a full response.
