Crisis and community care grants

Community care grants

A community care grant can help you set up or keep a safe and secure home if you are going through a difficult time.

You may be able to apply if:

  • you are leaving care or prison and have been offered a tenancy
  • you are moving from homeless accommodation into a new home
  • you need support to live independently and are at risk of homelessness or needing care
  • you are caring for someone who has recently been released from prison
  • you are under extreme pressure and need help to provide a safe home for your family
  • you are leaving a situation of domestic abuse

If your application is successful, we usually provide items rather than cash, such as:

  • help with removal costs
  • household items like a cooker, washing machine, or fridge
  • essential furniture, such as a bed, sofa, or chair

Checks we carry out

We will check that you need the items you have applied for. This may include getting information from other council departments or organisations that are supporting you.

Timescales

We will contact you by phone, text, or email within 15 working days of receiving your application.

This may take longer if we are very busy or if we need more information or evidence from you.

Submitting evidence

You may be asked to upload evidence on the application form.

If you need help with uploading evidence, see our guidance on uploading files to online forms.
