Athletics development

Primary Schools:

September to February - Sports Hall Athletics

There will be three festivals for all four areas (Hamilton, Clydesdale, Cambuslang/Rutherglen, and East Kilbride) before Christmas, and a scoring final for each area in January.

The first two schools from each area will then qualify to go through to the South Lanarkshire Final in February, and from there the winning two schools will qualify for the West of Scotland Final, also held in February, at the John Wright Sports Centre.

March - Cross Country

Primary 6 & 7 pupils will compete in the cross country events over the four areas of South Lanarkshire with the top 10 athletes in each event going through to represent their area in the South Lanarkshire Final, held at the Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds at the end of March.

May/June - Track and Field Championships

Primary 6 & 7 children will compete in the 100m, 600m, Javelin and Long Jump at the event within their area. All winners from the 4 events will go through to represent their area in the South Lanarkshire Track and Field Championships Final in June.

Triathlon

Clydesdale Tri Fest, Carluke Leisure Centre, P5/6/7 (all Clydesdale Primary schools).

Secondary Schools:

Aquathlon

Secondary schools Aquathlon championships, Dollan Aqua Centre, East Kilbride, S1-S6. Event includes individuals and relays.

Sports Hall Athletics/Giant Heptathlon

S1 & S2 pupils will compete in two sports hall athletics events from September to December. They will then take part in the Giant Heptathlon event which will take place at the John Wright Sports Centre, East Kilbride, in February with the top school going through to represent South Lanarkshire at the National final.

Triathlon

This year South Lanarkshire leisure has introduced Triathlon training camps for adults of all levels. The camps consist of a 1 hour coached swim session and a 2 hour bike/run session which can be either road bike, mountain bike or turbo trainer (indoor) sessions.

These camps will be held in Hamilton, East Kilbride and Carluke from September through to April.

There will be turbo training classes at the Hamilton Palace sports grounds on a Sunday morning. These classes are all indoor for all levels on computerised equipment, all you have to do is bring your own bike.

ACE Athletics/Triathlon Clubs

There are 9 ACE athletics clubs within South Lanarkshire:
Monday - Carluke Leisure Centre, Fairhill Lifestyles
Tuesday – Ally McCoist Complex; Disability Athletics – Carluke Leisure Centre 5:00-6:00pm
Wednesday – Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds; Disability Athletics – John Wright Sports Centre
Thursday – Blackwood & Kirkmuirhill Community Wing, Stonelaw Community Sports Centre, John Wright Sports Centre.

There are 4 ACE triathlon / duathlon clubs within South Lanarkshire:
Thursday – Carluke Leisure Centre
Sunday – Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds, Carluke Leisure Centre, Coalburn Leisure Complex.

All of these clubs are designed and aimed to offer children a fun environment to develop a healthy lifestyle whilst providing a step by step introduction to all aspects of athletics and triathlon.

Open Water Swimming

James Hamilton Heritage Park, East Kilbride.

Friday 5:30-6:30pm and 6:30-7:30pm (age 8+). Participants must be able to swim 400m.

Turbo Training Classes

Turbo training classes will be starting on Tuesday 8th September and Sunday 4th October.

Tuesday classes – Set up 6:30pm, Class 7:00-8:00pm
Sunday classes – Set up 9:00am, Class 9:30-11:00am with optional 20-40min run off the bike.

These classes are all indoor for all levels on computerized equipment, all you have to do is bring your own bike. Both classes are coached by our highly experienced cycling coach Paul Coats.
