Firework Control Zones
The Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022 gave local authorities the power to designate firework control zones (FCZs) within South Lanarkshire.
An FCZ makes it a criminal offence for members of the public to light fireworks within that area, including on private land, and to throw or fire lit fireworks into it. FCZs can be set up by the council, working with partner agencies, when deemed appropriate. They are not intended to solve all fireworks issues, but should be used alongside other measures for best results.
Communities or the council may request an FCZ for reasons such as misuse, injuries, effects on vulnerable groups, environmental concerns, or animal welfare. Before decisions are made, the council must consult with residents, workers, and interested organisations in or near the proposed zone.
If designated, the public must refrain from using fireworks there, except for Category F1 fireworks, like sparklers, and authorised public displays. Enforcement falls to Police Scotland.
Currently, there are no active FCZs in South Lanarkshire, but any future proposals will be published on this page.
How to request a Firework Control Zone
Community groups of 20 or more residents can request an FCZ by submitting an application through a lead contact and providing reasons.
Any community group interested in applying for an FCZ in their area should email stratsupadm@southlanarkshire.gov.uk.
How to report fireworks misuse or mis-selling
