Bonfires and fireworks

If you intend to sell fireworks to consumers you must first obtain a licence from us. If you intend to sell fireworks all year round you must also obtain an all-year licence from us. Failure to hold a licence or comply with the storage requirements can result in prosecution with a fine up to £20,000 and/or a prison sentence.

How to apply

You should complete the online application form on the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website and download a PDF copy of the completed application, then forward it together with your payment to Consumer and Trading Standards. Your application will not be considered unless payment is received with the form. For more information please refer to the HSE website.

How the application is dealt with

Your application will be checked and an officer from Trading Standards will visit your premises. Registration may be refused if you have previously committed fireworks offences or if you or your premises are deemed unsuitable.

Can anyone object?

No. Consumer and Trading Standards check the application for registration and issue the extract if everything is in order unless they have concerns. More stringent regulations on fireworks are being introduced in new legislation shortly.

When can fireworks be sold?

The traditional permitted periods for selling fireworks are:

• Chinese New Year
