Alive in Wonderland

Take a walk through East Kilbride Arts Centre gardens . Enjoy the atmospheric setting with scenes from the world-famous books Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Mixed media artist Michelle Keenan promotes the use of found goods and recycled materials in her work. Following on from her Bring Me to Life exhibition, she has been working towards creating larger than life sculptures. These will be set in the Arts Centre gardens alongside atmospheric lighting. This will bring to life scenes from the books and allow visitors to fully emerge themselves in the experience.

The local community collected found goods and recyclable material over the last two years. Michelle and fellow artist Venamouse transformed these materials into a large outdoor installation to be enjoyed by all.

Recycling is a huge part of the sculptures in the Alive in Wonderland installation. The body of each sculpture is made up of materials that otherwise end up in landfills. This is then sculpted, moulded and painted to bring the finished piece to life.

Andrew Sheppard - Beautalism, exhibition at East Kilbride Arts Centre

This current body of work has been inspired by the urban and rural environments which are on my doorstep. Symbolised by abstract architectural shapes and cartography symbols, I like to represent the landscape as I see it.

The juxtaposition of urban and industrial elements surrounded by the rural creates interesting visual contrasts. This is in abundance around East Kilbride.

The past two years have given me many opportunities to explore my surroundings in greater detail. I have been a visitor to this area since 1979 and a resident since 2018. During my time as a resident, I have developed a much stronger attachment with, and appreciation of, the architecture and urban design found here.

Some of my work alludes to forgotten elements of the industrial landscape that have been consigned to history. It reimagines them as dark and brooding monoliths.  More recently I have been leaning towards a more ‘elevated’ view of the landscape. I have begun imagining the view from a much higher perspective.

This work is in its infancy and in a state of flux. The visual vocabulary for these pieces is an evolution from my previous work.

Schematics, diagrams and blueprints also hold a visual fascination for me. I feel their influence upon my work suits its nature.

I am influenced by the Brutalist architects of mid-century Europe and conceptual Futurist architect Antonio Sant' Elia. The cinematic pre-production work of Ralph McQuarrie and Syd Mead and contemporary printmaker, Ian Chamberlain also are influences.

The work featured leans upon my enjoyment of working with graphite. I also have found pleasure in the immediacy of photo-collage. More recently, my interest in working with acrylic has been rekindled.

Time's Plague

Written by Chris Dolan.
Directed by David Hayman Jnr.

David Hayman returns as everyman Bob Cunninghame.

Bob is in a hospital bed. A long dark night of the soul, an understaffed ward, a single room. Another stormy night.  He’s on the top floor of the hospital. The Death Star.
He’s broken – as is the world around him… And tomorrow morning?  It sounds like a painful and risky procedure, but Bob is convinced he won’t survive it.

This doesn’t stop Bob from ranting about injustice and the state of the world… laughing at everything, including himself.  No way Bob’s going gently into that good night, he’ll burn and rave at close of day, raging against the dying of the light.

Available to book online or by calling East Kilbride Arts Centre on 01355 261000.

Cost: £15.00
