Why your bin has been tagged

Why your bin was not emptied and what to do next

If your bin has a red tag, we have found items that should not be in it. When this happens, we cannot empty the bin. You should remove the incorrect items, put them in your black or green household waste bin or take them to a household waste and recycling centre. Then put your recycling bin out on your next collection day for that bin.

Since April 2025, a valid garden waste permit is needed for garden waste in your burgundy bin. If you do not have a permit, we will not empty the bin.

You can check what goes in each recycling bin here:

Why your black or green bin has not been emptied

There are a few reasons why we may not be able to empty your non‑recyclable bin. If this happens, we may place a tag on the bin.

Your bin is overfull

If the lid does not close, the bin is unsafe for our crews to empty. Remove enough waste so the lid closes fully, then put the bin out on your next collection day for that bin. You can also take extra waste to a household waste and recycling centre or request a bulk uplift.

Your bin is damaged

If the bin is cracked or unsafe to lift, we cannot empty it. You can request a replacement bin. We only replace black or green bins free of charge if they were damaged during collection.

Excess waste beside the bin

We do not collect bags or waste placed beside your bin. Please take extra waste to a household waste and recycling centre or request a bulk uplift.

More than one non‑recyclable bin

We only empty one black or green bin per household. If you continue to present extra bins, we may remove them.

  • we will empty one non-recyclable (black/green) waste bin per property only. If you continue to present more than one, we may remove the additional bin(s).
