Waste and recycling centres

Site opening hours are available here:

Carluke Waste and Recycling Centre booking system

You need to book a slot to dispose of household waste at this site. You can book online from our Carluke Waste and Recycling Centre page or by calling 0303 123 1020.

Cardboard contamination at East Kilbride, Hamilton/Blantyre and Eastfield (Rutherglen) HWRC’s

Over the coming weeks, fencing will be installed around the cardboard skips at the above sites. This fencing will have letter box type openings that will allow only flat packed cardboard to be posted through into the skip. Please empty cardboard boxes and flat pack them before coming to the site.

These measures are being put in place due to high levels of contamination resulting in cardboard not being able to be recycled and also increased disposal costs. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Mattresses, couches and other upholstered seating

From 1 April 2024, due to UK-wide legislation about the collection and disposal of certain types of waste, we are unable to accept mattresses, couches and other upholstered seating at our smaller sites in Larkhall and Strathaven.

This is because there is insufficient space at the smaller sites to accommodate additional, dedicated skips.

Residents will still be able to dispose of these items at our larger sites in Carluke, East Kilbride, Hamilton/Blantyre and Rutherglen. Residents are also still able to request a bulk uplift for these items online, or by phoning 0303 123 1020.

Smoking

Smoking on site is strictly prohibited and can result in fire and risk to the public and site staff's health.

Gypsum, plasterboard, and asbestos

We work with Biffa to get the most out of your general household (non-recyclable) waste through energy recovery. These facilities are not designed to treat gypsum, plasterboard, and asbestos, which require specialist disposal. We do accept gypsum and plasterboard in special skips at all of our household waste and recycling centres. However, asbestos is a hazardous material and can only be disposed of at East Kilbride Waste and Recycling Centre. See our Hazardous waste page for further information.

Household waste and recycling centres (civic amenity sites)

These sites are for the use of South Lanarkshire residents only.

Our sites accept household waste in cars and vans up to 3.5t in weight and vehicles with trailers. No tipper vehicles are allowed.

Waste produced by traders or other businesses is commercial waste and cannot be deposited at household waste recycling centres free of charge. Staff may inspect waste coming into the sites to ensure that it is not from a commercial source. Commercial waste can be disposed of at East Kilbride, Rutherglen, and Blantyre sites 7 days a week, and from 8am to 2pm Monday to Friday at our Carluke site. Disposal of commercial waste is subject to a charge

Charities remain able to dispose of recyclable waste including metal, wood, cardboard, and textiles (in the textile banks provided). Domestic waste and bulky items from charities are not currently accepted at these sites.

To keep site users and staff safe, there will be a number of temporary changes to the arrangements that were in place before the sites were closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

These are:

  • only visit the site if you have no Covid-19 symptoms
  • access is for South Lanarkshire residents only - please bring proof of address
  • there will be a queuing system and a limited number of vehicles will be allowed inside at a time
  • once parked, only two people from the same household can exit each car
  • maintain physical distancing and take instructions from site staff regarding disposal
  • staff will not be able to help you unload
  • last entry 15 minutes before closing

We are all in this together – so please don’t make your rubbish your neighbours’ problem. Remember that fly-tipping is a criminal offence that carries substantial fines.
