Winter driving tips

Driving in winter can be challenging. You can reduce the risk by preparing your vehicle, planning ahead and adjusting how you drive in icy or snowy conditions.

Watch our short video for practical advice on braking, handling skids and what to carry in your car.

Prepare before you travel

Before setting off, check your vehicle:

  • make sure you have enough fuel
  • check oil and top up if needed
  • check antifreeze levels
  • make sure tyres are correctly inflated
  • clean your windscreen and top up winter screen wash
  • check all lights are working

Also:

  • plan your route and think about alternatives
  • allow extra time for your journey
  • charge your mobile phone
  • tell someone where you are going and when you expect to arrive if conditions are severe

What to carry in your car

Take a winter kit with you, including:

  • ice scraper and de-icer
  • torch and spare batteries
  • shovel and a small bag of salt
  • warm clothes and blankets
  • boots
  • first aid kit
  • jump leads or battery pack
  • phone charger
  • paper map in case your phone loses power
  • food, water and a reflective warning sign
  • sunglasses for low winter sun

Driving in winter conditions

When driving on icy or snowy roads:

  • do not assume the road has been gritted
  • keep a safe distance from other vehicles
  • slow down by easing off the accelerator
  • brake, steer and accelerate gently
  • look well ahead and plan your movements

If your vehicle skids:

  • ease off the accelerator
  • do not brake suddenly

On slippery hills:

  • use a higher gear where possible
  • avoid pulling away in first gear
