Council Tax - exemptions and discounts (occupied properties)
Other categories
Armed Forces
If you or someone in your household is serving in the Armed Forces and has had to live elsewhere to carry out their duties, you may be able to get a Council Tax discount. The discount can be 25% or 50%, depending on how many other adults live in your home.
Members of a religious community
You may be able to get a 50% Council Tax discount if your home is fully occupied by members of a religious community. To qualify:
- the community’s main purpose must be prayer, contemplation, education and the relief of suffering
- each member must rely on the community for all daily needs, including accommodation, food and clothing
- members must have no personal income or savings, apart from a pension from previous employment
Each person living in the property must complete their own application. The head of the community must confirm each one.
Occupied on a trial basis and owned by registered social landlord
If a registered social landlord owns the property and it is temporarily occupied by older or disabled tenants on a trial basis, you may be able to get a 100% Council Tax exemption. This applies when the tenants are expected to move to another home provided by the same landlord as their main residence.
