Council Tax - exemptions and discounts (occupied properties)
In prison or other forms of detention
If you or someone in your household is in prison for an offence other than the non-payment of a fine, or under another form of detention, you may be able to reduce your Council Tax bill by 25%, 50% or 100% depending on how many other adults (over the age of 18) live in the property.
To qualify under this category, the person must have been:
- detained in a prison, a hospital or any other place by a British court
- detained under the deportation provisions of the Immigration Act 1971
- detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, the Mental Health (Care and Treatment)(Scotland) Act 2003 or the Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1995
