Council Tax - exemptions and discounts (occupied properties)

Training schemes and apprenticeships

You may be able to get a Council Tax discount of 25% or 50% if you, or someone you live with, is an apprentice or on a youth training scheme. The level of discount depends on how many adults live in your home.

Apprentices

You can apply for a discount if an apprentice in your home:

  • earns less than £256 a week before tax and National Insurance
  • is training towards a recognised qualification

The weekly earnings limit changed on 1 April 2024. Before that, it was £237 a week (April 2023 to March 2024) and £195 a week before April 2023.

Information you need to provide

When you apply, you must upload evidence from the apprentice’s employer. It must confirm:

  • apprentice’s name and date of birth
  • employer’s name and address
  • course name/certificate or qualification details
  • course start and end dates
  • current gross weekly wage and the wage after qualifying

Youth training

If you, or someone you live with, is on an approved youth training scheme, you may also qualify for a 25% or 50% Council Tax discount. The amount you can get depends on how many adults live in the property.
