Your story, my story, our story

My name is Yvonne. I am seventeen years old and I attend a rural high school. For my whole life I have grown up with Mike, my big brother, and I love him to bits. However, Mike and I are worlds apart or maybe a better way of explaining things is to say that we are at opposite ends of a spectrum.

My brother Mike is on the autistic spectrum - he has Asperger’s Syndrome.

Through the years Mike and I have found ourselves in some complex situations. Over time we have worked through many things. I accept Mike as he is and I would not want him to be any different from the way he is – he would not be my brother then. I want to support him so that he is able to live his life more fully with his family and he is not restricted to the narrow world that many people who have Asperger’s often are. I am in a good place with my brother now that I am seventeen but it was not always like that.

The kind of support this pack is designed to give would definitely have helped me growing up and I hope sharing my experiences help others in similar situations.
