Changing your tenancy
Tell us when someone moves out
If someone moves out of your council home, you must tell us as soon as possible. This helps us keep your tenancy records up to date and make sure your rent and housing details stay correct.
Why it matters
Changes to who lives in your home can affect your tenancy and any benefits you receive. If you are now the only adult living in the property, this could change your housing benefit, council tax reduction, or council tax discount.
You must report the change even if the person moving out was not named on the tenancy agreement.
Check your benefits
If you receive housing benefit or council tax reduction, you must also report the change to our benefits team. This helps prevent overpayments or problems later.
Before you make other changes
If you are thinking about any other change to your tenancy, read the guide for council tenants page first. It explains your rights, responsibilities, and what permissions you may need.
