Homelessness
Rent deposit scheme for private renting
If you are homeless or at risk of losing your home, we can help you rent from a private landlord through our rent deposit scheme. Instead of paying a cash deposit upfront, we provide a written guarantee to the landlord. This can make it easier and faster for you to move into a settled home.
How the scheme works
We give your landlord a written guarantee instead of a deposit. This can cover the cost of:
- damage to the property or furniture beyond normal wear and tear
The guarantee does not cover:
- normal wear and tear
- rent in advance
- unpaid utility bills
- service charges (such as heating or lighting in shared areas)
- rent owed if you leave without giving notice
Who can apply
You may be eligible if you:
- have contacted us for housing advice and are homeless or at risk
- can afford the rent, including any benefits
- cannot afford a cash deposit
- have a local connection to South Lanarkshire
- agree to save towards your own deposit over time (usually 6 to 12 months)
How to apply
You cannot apply directly. A Housing Officer must refer you.
To get started:
- contact your local housing office
- book a housing options appointment
- ask about the rent deposit scheme
Finding a property
We can help you look for a suitable home. If you find a property yourself, we will contact the landlord to see if they will accept the deposit guarantee.
